Data for Joy: A Breakthrough Memoir About Life As A Data Professional

I interviewed former colleague Phylis Savari to discuss her breakthrough memoir, “Data for Joy”, about life as a data professional in Silicon Valley. I was so inspired by this book about “a data scientist’s quest for digital wellness and inner peace”, I sought out Phylis to ask her more questions about this book and her motivations for writing it. In the video below you will find a conversation ranging from life’s journey (and work lifecycles) to relationships to the data analytics profession to life’s energies and even to mental health. We conducted a comprehensive review of what it means to be a data professional.

We purposely chose an outdoor setting with all its natural beauty and ambient sounds. This choice was consistent with the tagline of Data for Joy: “Restoring Balance in the Age of Algorithms.” We seek to maintain our humanity, “the human in the loop”, in this quickly advancing age of algorithms and AI, and our place in nature is one of several immediate reminders that we belong to nature and not to the machines. In this engaging conversation you will find that Phylis and I are quite comfortable and centered by the natural surroundings even as we geek out on our chosen profession in data. We would love to hear your comments and feedback either here in the article or in the video!

The Data Professional – from the book…

“MIT engineer Phylis Savari witnessed the unfolding of big data in the heart of Silicon Valley. As the tech industry’s unchecked ambition collided with ethical dilemmas and personal burnout, a chance encounter in a redwood forest sparked an unexpected journey of self-discovery. Several years later, Phylis launched a company to help others make conscious, healthy choices in the online world. Data for Joy charts a quest to balance logic with intuition, ambition with well-being, and cutting-edge technology with timeless wisdom.”
